In Memory of Cassandra

Women be wise, keep your mouth shut, don't advertise your man Don't sit around gossiping, explaining what your good man really can do Some women nowadays, Lord they ain't no good They will laugh in your face, Then try to steal your man from you Women be wise, keep your mouth shut, don't advertise your man Don't be no fool

Tomorrow I'll be going to a demonstration on Douglass campus held by the Human Rights House, specifically my friend Elizabeth on the corner of Nichol and George St. The demonstration will call for the immediate and forced resignation of Mr. Imus from MSNBC. His low-life comments about the women of the Lady Knights basketball team were not only disgusting but hateful and should be met with proper consequences.

His remarks were racist and wrong, and made more poignant by the haughty manner in which he slandered these ladies. They did nothing to deserve anything less than either serious sports commentary or acknowledgement of their achievements.

No one ever said a damn thing about how cute Leonard or Rice were when they lost the big game. What kind of company is MSNBC that they would want to promote a world in which young talented women can be slandered and humiliated because one racist man decides they are not beautiful enough for him. In this great country that embraces and fights in belief of human dignity, how long will women be subjected to the hateful male gaze? It is disgusting and I as a woman and as an American am angry.

Is America the biggest high school in the world? Will Imus be allowed to hide between the legs of the constitution, will we sit by and allow Imus to tell us what he thinks is "appropriate". I think we've already heard enough from Imus, and I can tell you, he is the last person I would want dictating what is appropriate.

I say we make it hurt. I'd like to see him on the court with anyone he pleases against our girls. One on one. Or give one of them his job and see how quickly he becomes a faded memory.

Aren't we at war? Aren't our constitutional rights violated every day? Why protect this man now? I want to know what woman is sleeping with this man. I want to see her beautiful face and I want to know what she feels is appropriate. I'm hoping she and I are on the same page.

enough.
