What a nice 4th. I don't usually pay much attention to the fourth of the month, but this month's 4th was exceptionally good. It was really great to spend some time with Ali and Elizabeth and Christina. I had my first turkey burger (pretty good) and swam in a beautiful pool. Then I raced along detoured roads to get to Joe's house before the fireworks. He fell asleep on me during the ride home and I thought to myself that everything was somehow as perfect as the fourth can ever be.
All that having been said, it would have also been nice to have gone with my dad into the city to see the additional matisse works. A month ago I said how I wanted to go to the museums while I still had some of the information fresh on my mind... and I have yet to do that.
I was in the car, driving home this morning and a thought occurred to me. Well actually it was prompted by this song...
Banditos
So just how far down do you want to go
Well we can talk it out over a cup of joe
And you can look deep in my eyes
Like I was a super-model
Uh huh
Well it’s just you and me baby
No one else we can trust
We’ll say nothing to no one
No how or we’ll bust
And never crack a smile or flinch or cry
For nobody
Uh huh
Well give your ID card to the border guard
Yeah your alias says you're Capt. Jean-Luc Picard
Of the United Federation of Planets
'Cuz he won’t speak english anyways
Everybody knows that the world is full of stupid people
So meet me at the mission at midnight
We’ll divvy up there
Everybody knows that the world is full of stupid people
But I got the pistol
So I'll keep the pesos
Yeah that seems fair
So put the sugar in the tank of the sheriff’s car
And slash the deputy’s tires
They won’t get very far
When they finally get the word that there’s been a hold-up
Uhuh
Everybody knows that the world is full of stupid people
So meet me at the mission at midnight
We’ll divvy up there
Everybody knows that the world is full of stupid people
So I got the pistol
So I get the pesos
That seems fair
That seems fair
--The Refreshments
So this song made me think about the fact that everyone in star trek spoke english and how either that was kinda stupid or ethnocentric or perhaps we were supposed to just understand their language because of some sort of futuristic brain slug like in the movie "Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy". And then, I thought about what it'd be like if you never had to learn another language. Or in other words, if you never got to. The "convenience" of relying on some infalliable translator. The complete faith that truth is truth and words are vessels of meaning. Or perhaps just the complete distinction being made between the art of language and the instrument of communication. Would it bring us closer together? Or would it just further destroy the appreciation of (or perhaps even existance of) enriched differences and perspective. If the world was only given one language, or if the world could only recognize one language what would that say of the world, the future, our intentions. I dont know. But I do know that thinking that much about that song has made me extremely hungry. So i'm going to go eat something.
Come to my party.
